The Millennium . . . 1000 Years
Rev. 20:1-6 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. [2] And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, [3] And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. [4] And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. [5] But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. [6] Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. (KJV)
The 1000 year period in the Bible is called the Millenium (a Latin word meaning 1000 years). It is a much disputed topic. It is called the Millennial Kingdom, or the Millennial Reign of Christ. Biblically, the millenium refers to the 1000 year reign of Christ on Earth, but there are many different interpretations.
Premillennialism
This is the earliest known interpretation. The belief here is that Christ will return to the Earth physically, to establish His Kingdom on Earth for 1000 years. During this time, Satan shall be bound in the bottomless pit, where he will be unable to deceive people as he does now. After the 1000 years are fulfilled: Satan will be let loose again for a little while, but will quickly be overthrown by the Almighty King, Christ Jesus the Messiah. Those who hold this view believe that this “Kingdom” is yet to come.
There are two sides to premillennialism. (1) The first side is Historic Premillennialism places the Rapture of the church (1 Thes.4:13-18) and the start of the millennium together, as a part of the same event, also known as post-tribulation rapture, and argues that believers must go through the 7 year Great Tribulation period, prior to the glorious reappearance of our lord Jesus. This, I personally cannot agree with for Jesus said He will keep us from the wrath to come. See the following Scripture verses.
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (KJV)
Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. (KJV)
Philip. 3:20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: (KJV)
1 Thes. 1:10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come. (KJV)
1 Thes. 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, (KJV)
Rev. 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. (KJV)
The Great Tribulation is God’s wrath on an evil and unbelieving world. These verses tell me that true believers will NOT see the Tribulation period but be removed from this world BEFORE that horrendous time begins.
(2). The second side, belief or opinion of premillennialism is Dispensational Premillennialism which believes in a pre-tribulation rapture of the church, which is TRUE believers being removed from the Earth before the Great Tribulation period. Immediately after the Rapture (1 Thes.4:13-18), the 7 year Tribulation begins and at its end, Christ Jesus will gloriously reappear and begin His Millennial reign.
The Premillennial view believes in a literal interpretation of the Bible. For the first two centuries this was the accepted view of the church.
Amillennialism
The prefix (a) in front of the word, negates that word. This view does not accept the literal interpretation of Revelation 20. They believe the 1000 years is figurative and should not be taken literally. They believe the Millennium is a spiritual representation of the church age, in which we now live. They believe that Satan was bound at Christ’s First Coming. They believe the good in the world is the Kingdom of Christ, and the evil in the world is Satan’s kingdom. The Kingdom of Christ is the church itself. This was first proposed and accepted by St. Augustine and is the favored position of the Roman Catholic church. These believe that Christ will reign through His church until His Second Coming, which will begin not the Millennium, but eternity.
Postmillennialism
Those who hold this view, believe that Christ’s reign will begin somewhere between His First and Second Comings, but that it doesn’t arrive at once, but in degrees. Similar to Amillennialism, Postmillennialism denies the literal interpretation of Revelation 20. They believe the 1000 years is figurative and that it represents a time when Christ reigns in the hearts of believers. The Kingdom is brought in gradually through evangelism.
This view was developed in the 16th century, and believes conditions in the world will improve over time, getting better and better. Do you think things are getting better? or worse?
Preterism
Preterism believes that the majority of prophecies in the Book of Revelation were fulfilled with the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD. They do believe in a final judgment following a symbolic Millennial Kingdom, but believe that all other prophecy has been fulfilled.
There are many flaws in this view.
- 1. Most Biblical scholars believe John wrote Revelation about 95 AD. How could he prophesy about something that already happened in 70 AD?
- 2. When was the mark of the beast implemented (Rev.13:16-17)?
- 3. When did the Euphrates River dry up (Rev.16:12)?
- 4. Why isn’t there a record of the 100 pound hailstones (Rev.16:21)?
- 5. Why was Israel scattered for almost 2000 years, then reborn as an independent nation in 1948?
These questions cannot be answered while believing in the Preterist view.
Our Belief
We believe that only the Premillennialist view takes a literal interpretation of Revelation chapter 20. True, the Bible does speak symbolically or figuratively at times, but it is pretty clear when it does so. If a Passage can be taken literally, it should be. The thousand years is specifically mentioned six times (20: 2,3,4,5,6,7). Other mentions of time in Revelation are also specific: ten days (Rev.2:10); forty two months (Rev.11:2; 13:5); a thousand two hundred and threescore days (Rev. 11:3; 12:6); three days and an half (Rev. 11:9, 11). True . . . there are some time periods that are unclear: a little while (Rev. 6:11); a short time (Rev.12:12); an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year (Rev. 9:15).
Postmillennialism and Amellennialism considers us to currently be in a symbolic millennial Kingdom of Christ Jesus. But, Isaiah pictures for us what the real and true and actual Millennial Kingdom shall be like.
Isaiah 11:4-10 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. [5] And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. [6] The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. [7] And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. [8] And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den. [9] They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. [10] And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. (KJV)
This wonderful age is YET to come, a time of absolute and complete peace. Children will play with animals and snakes that are now deadly, dangerous and poisonous. This was NOT fulfilled at Christ’s first coming. Nature has NOT returned to its intended balance and harmony. Such perfect tranquility will be possible only when Christ reigns over the Earth. What Isaiah saw was an Eden-like utopia, filled with peace and joy throughout. How could anyone think we live in that world today? How could anyone think that Satan is bound in the bottomless pit and not wreaking havoc in this wicked world? The world in which we live is NOT the world as God created it. Sin and rebellion started way back with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and has continued ever since, worsening with each passing year. Mankind chose to rebel against God, and was cast out of that perfect place God had made. The Millennium will be a time when our Lord Jesus Christ will reign over the world that will be as God meant it to be. When Satan is bound, he will be unable to influence and deceive people.
Isaiah 65:17-25 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. [18] But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. [19] And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying. [20] There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed. [21] And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. [22] They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. [23] They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the Lord, and their offspring with them. [24] And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. [25] The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the Lord. (KJV)
The new heavens and a new earth shall be so wonderful that no one will even think about the old ones anymore. Jerusalem will be a place of happiness, not like today. Her people, Israel will be a source of joy. The sound of weeping and crying will be heard no more. Babies won’t die when only a few days old. Adults won’t die until they have lived a full life. People will not be considered old at one hundred! Only sinners will die young!
People will live in the houses they build and eat the fruit of their own vineyards. No more welfare checks for the able bodied. The people will live as long as trees and will have time to enjoy their hard-won gains. They will not work in vain, and their children will not be doomed to misfortune. The people will be blessed by the Lord, and their children, too, will be blessed. God will answer them even before they call to Him. While they are still talking to Him about their needs, God will answer their prayers! The wolf and lamb will feed together. The lion will eat straw like the ox. Poisonous snakes will not be a worry anymore. In those days, no one will be hurt or destroyed on God’s holy mountain (Jerusalem). God has spoken!
Rev.19:11-21 indicates that the “nations” will be destroyed, but, it does NOT say that every single individual of every single nation were destroyed. It says that the kings of the Earth and their armies were destroyed. It seems very probable that there shall be some citizens from the nations shall remain, and some shall be Jesus’ sheep (Mat.25:31-46), at which time the obedient followers shall be separated from pretenders and unbelievers, with them going into the 1000 year Kingdom.
During this 1000 year period, there shall be a great increase in population. All those who enter the Kingdom in their natural bodies, will be able to reproduce, whereas the saints in their glorified bodies are not able to reproduce.
Matthew 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. (KJV)
Luke 20:34-35 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: [35] But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: (KJV)
Since those who go into the Kingdom with their natural bodies can have children, following generations will have the same choice we have here today . . . we can follow Christ, or refuse to follow Christ. This is why Christ must rule the Kingdom with a rod of iron. His enemies shall be subject to His terrible power (Job 4:9; Rev.2:27).
Zech. 14:16-19 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. [17] And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain. [18] And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the Lord will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. [19] This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles. (KJV)
Verse 16 tells us that there will not only be a remnant of Israel saved, but also some from each nation of the Gentiles. These will be the ones who enter the Millennial Kingdom. Egypt is used as an example in verses 18 and 19. Some will say, “I thought this was the Millennium!” It is! But the Millennium will be a time of testing those who have turned to God, for instance . . . not everyone who goes to church is a Christian. So, the Millennium will be a time of testing to find God’s true ones from the hypocrites!
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles. Every one that is left of all the Gentile nations which came against Jerusalem (Zec.12:3,9; 14:2). Great changes shall take place at this time, not only physically, not only spiritually, not only economically; in fact, in every area of life, but also the manner of witnessing for God will be different during the Millennium. Today we have been commanded to begin at Jerusalem, and to go to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). But then, it shall be people from all nations will go up to Jerusalem . . . that is what they did before the Lord Jesus came and died on the cross. But after His death and resurrection He said, “Go to the ends of the earth with this message.” They shall “go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.” The Feast of Tabernacles is the feast that the Israelites celebrated when they came out of Egypt. In the Millennium, Israel will celebrate it because they have been brought from the ends of the earth back to Jerusalem.
Because of the grace and comfort believers have in and from Christ, we look forward to this new Heaven and new Earth. All former chaos, sins and miseries of the human race, shall not be remembered. The coming happy state of this period is described in different ways. All violence, immorality and evil, will be gone! Life will be greatly lengthened. In those happy days, all God’s people shall enjoy the fruit of their own labors. Children will be no trouble to their parents. All evil characteristics of sinners shall be completely gone. Everyone shall live in complete harmony. The Earth shall be full of happiness, like Heaven. We shall be blessed with the undisturbed enjoyment that is needful for peace, contentment and happiness. Let us obey His commands and look forward with great hope to this day.
The Millennial Kingdom is the first part of the eternal Kingdom, but it is also a time of judgment. The new Heaven and a new Earth will not come into being until God’s judgment is completed. When judgment is over, then God shall make all things new. After the Millennium, it shall be even more wonderful for the child of God. Jerusalem will be a city of great joy, not like today. One day it will be a city of absolute peace and joy. Life will be eternal in the eternal Kingdom. There won’t be any need for senior citizen homes because there won’t be any senior citizens. There won't be any need of doctors and hospitals, for no one will be sick. We all will be young! Prosperity is another feature of the Kingdom. It will be a time of real blessing. There will be permanence and stability. No crime, no violence, no immorality, no greed.
Today if the wolf and the lamb lie down together today, it is the wolf feeding on the lamb. But in the millennium they will be together, and the lion will eat straw. The One who created the lion will equip him to eat straw when He wants him to do it. The law of the jungle will be changed to harmonize with the rule of the King. There will be nothing to hurt or harm or make us afraid, no where in the whole world.
Future for Jerusalem
Isaiah 2:2-5 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. [3] And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. [4] And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. [5] O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord. (KJV)
“It shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains.” This is not speaking of the last days of the church. The last days of the church will be nothing but spiritual apostasy. Paul makes this clear in his pastoral epistles of 1 and 2 Timothy: “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith” (1 Tim. 4:1). The “latter times” of the church and the “last days” of Israel are NOT the same, neither do they happen at the same time, but there is some overlapping. They do not refer to the same period of time. The “last days” in this verse refers to the Great Tribulation Period. The Lord Jesus Christ made it clear, when His disciples asked Him, “When shall these things be?” (Luke 21:7 refers to the destruction of Jerusalem). By the “last days” He meant the Great Tribulation Period. The Great Tribulation ends with the coming of Christ to Earth and the setting up of His 1000 year Kingdom. The first part of Isaiah, chapters 2–5, deals with the Great Tribulation Period and the Kingdom that shall be set up on this Earth.
“The mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains.” This speaks of the nation of Israel after the church has been removed at the Rapture. The word mountain in Scripture is a symbol for a kingdom, an authority, or a rule. “The Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains” . . . that is above all the kingdoms of this Earth. ALL the kingdoms of this world shall become the Kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ, and He will be King of kings and Lord of lords. One reason that Israel is such a hot spot and such a sensitive piece of real estate is because it is the exact spot that God has chosen to be the political and religious center of the world during the Kingdom age. Daniel speaks of those days. “Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth” (Dan. 2:35). God’s Kingdom will be exalted, high above ALL the kingdoms of this world.
Isaiah 2:3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. [KJV]
During the Millennium, both the government and religious center will be in Jerusalem, and the Lord Jesus Christ will sit upon the throne of David. One of the main concerns of those who live on the Earth will be to discover and do the will of God. They will seek to learn His ways and walk in His paths. It’s NOT happening today! But, it shall one day!
Isaiah 2:4 And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. [KJV]
The period of the reign of Christ on the Earth during the Millennium will be yet another trial period for all mankind. And there will be many judged during that period. There shall also be multitudes that will be saved during that time also.
They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks. The rule of the Lord upon Earth at this time will be righteous, and He will insist that ALL the nations practice justice and fairness with each other. For the first time ever ALL countries will dwell together in peace. Only during this Kingdom age will the people be able to beat their swords into plowshares.
Joel 3:10 Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong. [KJV] Joel tells us that during the Great Tribulation just the opposite will be true: the people will beat their plowshares into swords. We are living in times like that right now. The idea of disarming nations and disarming individuals is, in my judgment, contrary to the Word of God. In the New Testament the Lord Jesus said: Luke 11:21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: (KJV) If you are going to have peace and safety, you must have law and order. The prophecy of beating swords into plowshares will be fulfilled during the Millennium, when the Lord Jesus is reigning. Then and only then, will you will be able to take the locks off of your doors, and you will be able to walk the streets at night in safety. No more soldiers getting killed in war, because there will be no more war. There will be no more need for weapons for defense. The Kingdom of the Lord is going to be one of peace. He is the Prince of Peace. Only then shall we have peace!
It is absolute stupidity for any man or nation to promise to bring peace upon the Earth today. The United Nations, founded to help bring peace on earth, has proven how powerless it is. It CANNOT bring peace on Earth, NO way! We do not have peace in the world, nor will we have peace until the Millennial reign of Christ. We are living in a big, bad, and very evil world. Man is incapable of bringing peace to this Earth. There will be NO peace as long as there is sin in the hearts of men (Jer.17:9) and a proud and arrogant ambition (actually lust) to rule over other people, and to have more than the next man (greed, covetousness).
The fact that Christ shall rule with a “rod of iron” indicates that there shall be hostility in this 1000 year reign of Christ. After thousands of years, with humanity given the choice to be for God, or against Him, the vast majority has chosen to live apart from His love, care and control. It will be the same in the 1000 years. Those who are not committed to Christ, will easily be deceived at the end of the 1000 years. They simply refuse to believe that Jesus has the power to save them from Hell . . . as do many today.
Rev. 20:8-10 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. [9] And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. [10] And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (KJV)
Gog and Magog are simply those people against God. As you see, Satan will gather a HUGE army . . . the number of whom is as the sand of the sea (meaning overwhelming numbers Gen.41:49; Jos.11:4; Jud.7:12). The nations will have gone as far away from God as they could. This army will surround Jerusalem and the saints (true people of God). Is this earthly Jerusalem? Or is it the New Jerusalem? I cannot answer that. But, to me, it doesn’t matter at all, because fire came down from God out of Heaven, and devoured them! This is God’s solution to this problem! Gone! All gone!
NOW . . . the good part! And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. NO more Satan ever again! When that old devil was cast into the bottomless pit (Rev. 20:1-3), he was released after the 1000 years. BUT . . . when he is cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, he shall be there FOREVER! After that, there shall be peace on the Earth as God originally intended.
Isaiah 2:5 O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord. [KJV] In view of the future that is absolutely coming, we all should walk in the light of the Lord each and every day we live, fearing His awesome and Almighty power. This is our only way to peace. If you leave God out, you will never have peace.
