Israel in the Great Tribulation

Luke 21:24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. (KJV)  
It is clear in the prophetic Scriptures there is at least one more time coming for Jerusalem when she will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles. This will be during a seven-year period known as the 70th Week of Daniel, the Tribulation Period.
Daniel 9:24-27 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. (KJV)

This period was also predicted by Jeremiah as the time of Jacob’s trouble.
Jeremiah 30:7 Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it. (KJV)  

At the beginning of this period, the world will come under the rule of a dictator identified in the Book of John as Antichrist. 1 John 2:18Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. (KJV)  
He will sign a peace covenant with Israel at the beginning of this seven years that will allow her to use the Temple Mount for worship and sacrifice (Dan. 9:27). This time will at first seem to Israel as the best of times because a long sought-after peace will be achieved with her Arab neighbors, and the Temple Mount that Israel has long desired to use in worship will be allowed and peacefully shared.
But, three and one half years into this agreement (half way), the Antichrist will prove to be an enemy to Israel. He will stop the Jewish worship of God (Dan. 9:27) and seat himself in the rebuilt Temple, and claim to be God (2 Thes.2:4). Jesus, quoting Daniel, named this event in Matthew 24:15 the abomination of desolation.
After proclaiming himself to be God, the Antichrist will immediately declare war on the Jewish people, killing many of them, while many others will run for their lives. This coming time will be worse than any time Israel has endured so far, including what Hitler did to them.
Matthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.(KJV)  
From the time the Antichrist declares himself to be God, he will begin to use Jerusalem as his political headquarters. Jerusalem will endure this Gentile ruler and be trampled under foot after being trampled so many times in history. But, this last time will be unique. This Antichrist will personally see the Return of Jesus and meet his doom.
