# 8 of the Eight ‘Last-Days’ Judgments

<><><>8. THE GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGMENT.
Rev. 20:11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. (KJV)
We now come to the last of the eight eschatological judgments . . . this Judgment that takes place at God’s Great White Throne. WHEN Will This Final Judgment Take Place? The Great White Throne Judgment takes place at the end of the Millennium, following the war to end all wars, the Battle of Gog and Magog (Rev.20:8).
In this world’s final war, the Adversary (Satan), recently released from his thousand-year confinement (Rev.20:7), will regroup his forces and lead them to surround the New Jerusalem (the beloved city). But, BEFORE they can strike, the rebels are quickly devoured and destroyed by “fire” coming down from God in Heaven. Rev. 20:9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. (KJV)
The battle takes just one verse . . . it is over almost before it begins. It seems that the battle itself will be almost as brief as John’s description of it.

WHO Will Be the Judge at the GREAT WHITE THRONE? This radiant throne is “great” because it belongs only to Christ Jesus, the Great Judge of this entire Universe. JESUS is the Matchless One, “very God of very God,” “the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.

Even though there are other “thrones” in Heaven (seats for saints having different degrees of authority (Rev. 4:4; 11:16; 20:4), there is only one “GREAT” throne, and that belongs to Jesus! Just before the Lord ascended back to Heaven in AD 30 or so, He affirmed His supreme authority: And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying: Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. (KJV)

WHO Will Be Judged at the GREAT WHITE THRONE? The lost people [unbelievers, rejecters of Christ] of ALL ages, from the Creation (Adam and Eve), until the close of the Millennium, will face judgment at the GREAT WHITE THRONE. Their bodies will be resurrected and reunited with their spirits that have been suffering in Gehenna up until this point. They are “LOST” because they have rejected God’s love and grace as embodied in His Son, Jesus the Christ: For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily (Col. 2:9). Rejecting the Son is identical to rejecting God Himself . . . because Jesus IS God! This judgment will be for ALL Jesus-rejecters. Jesus’ believers are not included because they have already been evaluated (and properly rewarded) at the Bema Judgment (2 Cor. 5:10).
Believers and unbelievers are NOT ever judged together, as some people think and believe.

The conditions for this Judgment at the GREAT WHITE THRONE are two “books” [heavenly records, databases] that shall be referred to for EVERYONE who comes before the GREAT WHITE THRONE. The first one is the Book of Life (Rev. 20:12). The second one is the Book where people’s “works” (deeds, both good and bad) are recorded. And dear one . . . there are absolutely NO mistakes made in Heaven!
The Book of Life is checked because it shows that their names are NOT registered in this all-important Book, because they did NOT receive God’s free gift of salvation through faith in His Son (1 John 5:10-13). Their lack of faith is what has condemned them: John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (KJV)

The second Book, is the one where their works are recorded, and is consulted to determine the severity of their punishment in the Lake of Fire. There are DEGREES of punishment in Hell, as well as there are DEGREES of rewards in Heaven!

Rev. 20:12-15 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (KJV)

Revelation 20 tells us that the unsaved dead will be judged at the GREAT WHITE THRONE “according to their works, by the things that were written in the books” (v. 12). This is consistent with the teaching that there will be degrees of punishment in Hell, just as there will be degrees of reward in Heaven. Suffering in Hellwill not be the same for ALL who go there! All sentences in the Lake of Fire are FOREVER . . . but the degree of punishment will vary according to “the person’s works.” Remember, works do not produce salvation. Salvation is what produces works . . . NOT the other way around!
When it comes to salvation, the only “work” God wants from us is our faith: John 6:28-29 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. (KJV) . . . Our Lord Jesus makes this crystal clear!

WHY Will People Be Judged at the GREAT WHITE THRONE? The reason for the GREAT WHITE THRONE Judgment will NOT be to decide ‘if people are saved.’ We already know they are NOT saved because they have been called up from Gehenna, the holding area in Hades/Sheol for lost souls. They have rejected God’s gracious offer of salvation through His Son, time after time, so their destiny is sealed. When they receive the verdict at this Final Judgment, they “will be cast into the Lake of Fire” (20:14).

We know little about this terrifying place John calls “the Lake of Fire,” except the fact that it is the final, eternal residence of all lost souls. One thing we do know for certain, it is a miserable, God-forsaken place that was never meant for humans. According to Jesus, Hell was “prepared for the devil and his angels,” NOT for people (Mat. 25:41). But, when humans reject God’s love and grace, they shall join the devil and his angels in that horrifying place.

The Book of Revelation says the armies surrounding and preparing to assault the New Jerusalem will be promptly destroyed by “fire” sent down from Heaven by God (20:9). It’s hard to imagine a more fitting “end of the line” for lawless rebels who insist on being as far from God as possible. Many liberal religions reject Hell as a real, literal place. To them, it’s more of a symbol, something unreal that is a figure of speech. So strange though, that these same skeptics who doubt the reality of Hell have no difficulty with the reality of Heaven. Dear one . . . HOW can Heaven be real if Hell is not real? Does this make sense to you???
Our Master and Lord, Christ Jesus talked about BOTH places; and I think that He spoke much more about Hell than He did Heaven. So, if Heaven is a literal reality, Hell must be real as well.

Is the “fire” also literal, like a forest fire or a burning building? I’m not sure. All I know is that there are volcanoes under us in places. We made a trip to Yellowstone a while back. There were hot springs everywhere. I want to comment on one thing that we saw . . . that being the boiling water in several places. I took pictures. It actually was scary to say the least! We were amazed. It certainly made us think! That hot water had to come from heat beneath the Earth, a volcano! I searched to find out more on volcanoes. There are volcanoes in every part of the Earth!
Now, considering this fact . . . consider just how many hot springs there are in the world, and then consider how many volcanoes there are all over the world.

What I am trying to get across to you is just how many hot springs and volcanoes there are all over the world. Where are they? Beneath the ground, in the center of the Earth. So . . . what does it look like down there? I would want to say that God tells us in EVERY Passage in the Bible that speaks of Hell and the lake of fire! It is only common sense to think that Hell is in the center of the Earth. And thinking how large the Earth is, it is only common sense to think that Hell will indeed be large enough to house all the wicked of the world.  (Isa.5:14; 14:9; 30:33; Pro.27:20; Eze.32:21; Hab.2:5; Mat.7:13; Rev.20:13-15).

Some say that the “fire” should NOT be taken literally but in a symbolical sense. The fact is that the Bible mentions “fire” very often in connection with the unsaved, the unbelievers, the rejectors of Christ.
In the realm of the dead [Gehenna, Hades, Sheol] . . . there shall be darkness and utter gloom which encompasses them. Flaming fire and darkness, oppose each other, but in these Biblical expressions we have the symbolical description of the wretched situation of lost souls.
In reality fire and darkness are opposites! But in my mind, they CAN be reconciled! When we consider just how large this Earth is, and when we consider the center of the Earth, it too is massive. It seems to me that there are many, many caves down there just as there are here on the Earth, and they would indeed be dark, just like the caves here. Anyone who has ever been in a cave, knows just how dark they can be. There is not a bit of light, it is totally dark, black as can be! On the other hand, there are fires everywhere else down there from the volcanoes.  When I think of Hell, this is what comes to my mind.

As stated before, some millennials believe the GREAT WHITE THRONE Judgment is for both believers and unbelievers. I say absolutely not! They draw this conclusion, in part, from Revelation 20:12, which says “the Book of Life” will be opened at the GREAT WHITE THRONE. To them, this means that believers will be present, as well as the lost. But dear one, the reason the Book of Life is opened at the GREAT WHITE THRONE is NOT to show whose names are there on its pages . . . but instead it shall reveal whose names are missing. So, the reason of bringing lost people before the GREAT WHITE THRONE Judgment is to confirm that their names do NOT appear in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Another reason is to determine the severity and extent [degree] of their punishment by studying what they did in this life on Earth.

Even though the suffering will be severe and endless for all those in Hell, the precise degree of punishment and suffering will differ as to the measure of sin in one’s life, the amount of one’s sinful influence on others, and the amount of Gospel Light that was rejected.
