The Timing of the Day of the Lord
Where does the Day of The Lord fit in with the Book of Revelation timetable? The Bible makes this quite clear, for anyone who is wise enough to search for the answer. There are some very impressive characteristics of the Day of The Lord that make it quite easy to find its fulfillment in the Book of Revelation.
Isaiah 2:12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low: (KJV)
Isaiah 2:19-21 And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.
20 In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats; 21 To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth. (KJV)
Isaiah 13:6-7 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty. 7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man's heart shall melt: (KJV)
Isaiah 13:13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. (KJV)
Isaiah 24:19-20 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. 20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again. (KJV)
Joel 3:14-16 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. 15 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. 16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel. (KJV)
These verses indicate that the day of the Lord will be marked by an earthquake so devastating the ALL the people in the world will experience it. This is a global event that will surpass any earthquake ever experienced in human history. God is literally rising up to shake the entire Universe and put the world on notice. HE is in complete control!
(2.) The Heavens are shaken; in addition to the earthquake.
Isaiah 24:17-21 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.
18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake. 19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. 20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again. 21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. (KJV) . . . The Lord specifically addresses this Passage of warning and woe to the “inhabitants of the earth.” It gives us a graphic description of the terrible overturning of all human order and institutions that lies ahead. Six times in these verses "the earth" is mentioned, meaning the established order and world-system of things rather than to the actual Earth on which we live. Everything everywhere will be violently shaken before they are removed by the Presence of the Lord. Can you even begin to imagine how angry God is at sin to do this? Can you even begin to imagine how awesome and tremendous His power really is?
Isaiah 24:18 states that the “windows from on high are open” signifying things falling from Heaven to Earth. And this opening goes hand in hand with the shaking of the Earth.
Ezekiel 32:7-8 And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.
8 All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord GOD. (KJV) . . . When God shall extinguish thy light (Job 18:5). Pharaoh is represented as a bright star, at the extinguishing of whose light in the political sky the whole heavenly host are shrouded in sympathetic darkness. Here, too (as in Eze.32:6 there was an reference to the plague of turning the rivers into blood), there is an reference to the supernatural darkness sent formerly (Ex.10:21-23). The heavenly bodies are often made images of earthly dynasties (Isa.13:10). Matthew 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: (KJV)
Joel 2:30-31 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. (KJV) . . . As the Messiah's appearance is complete joy to TRUE believers, it brings fear and anger to unbelievers, which is represented here. When the Jews did not receive Jesus at His First Coming (of grace), He came in judgment on Jerusalem. Massacres, and fires preceded its destruction.
Joel 3:15 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. (KJV) . . . Again Joel speaks of the disturbances in the heavenly bodies. The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining (Mat.24:29; Mark 13:24-25; Luke 21:25-26; Isa. 13:9-13; 34:1-2, 4, 8-10; Eze.32:7-8; Rev.8:12).
Isaiah 13:6-8 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty. 7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man's heart shall melt: 8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames. (KJV) . . . Pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them, as a woman that travaileth (1 Thes.5:3). They shall be astonished one at another with a puzzled gaze of dismay.
Their faces shall be as flames . . . people shall be terrified. Pangs of anguish grip them, like those of a woman in labor. They look helplessly at one another, their faces red with anger, fear, suffering, resentment and torment.
Isaiah 13:13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. (KJV) . . . I will shake the heavens (Isa.24:19; 34:4; Hab.3:6; Hag.2:6-7; Rev.20:11). This shaking of the heavens will be so stunning that the people of the Earth will be gripped with terror and fear. So much so that their hearts are described as “melting” (Isa.13:7; Jer.9:7; Eze.21:7; 22:20). The Passage also uses the languages of “pangs and sorrows” which indicates the Day of The Lord and end time judgment. Jesus confirms the same thing:
Luke 21:25-26 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; 26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. (KJV) . . . Again, Jesus states that people wil be so afraid that their hearts will fail them when they see what is coming to the Earth. The powers of heaven shall be shaken.
Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (KJV) . . .This informs us that “powers” are a reference to angelic beings and they are our enemy.
(3.) The Sun Turns Black and the Moon Turns to Blood
Joel 2:30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. (KJV) . . . God shall cause wonders in the heavens and on the Earth . . . blood and fire and pillars of smoke. The sun will be darkened, and the moon will turn the color of blood before that great and terrible day of the Lord arrives. And anyone who calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved. There will be people on Mount Zion in Jerusalem who escape, just as the Lord has promised. These will be among the survivors whom the Lord has called.
As we come to this section, let’s remember that we are in the prophecy of Joel, which began with a horrifying locust plague which he compared to a future event which he calls the day of the Lord, which shall begin with the Great Tribulation, after which Christ shall come and establish His Kingdom on the Earth. Verse 27 says the Lord will be in the midst of them (Israel). Don’t ever doubt that God Loves Israel! http://www.hisservants.org/tribulation_what_h_s.htm http://www.hisservants.org/tribulation_why_h_s.htm http://www.hisservants.org/israel_h_s.htm http://www.hisservants.org/israel_god_faithful_to_h_s.htm
Acts 2:20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: (KJV) . . . NO one can say that on the Day of Pentecost the moon was turned to blood or that the sun was turned to darkness. When Christ was crucified, there was darkness for three hours, but NOT on the Day of Pentecost. Nor were there wonders of Heaven above and signs in the Earth beneath. Neither was there blood and fire and a vapor of smoke. Simon Peter quotes this Passage to these mockers to simply SHOW them that the pouring out of the Spirit of God should not be strange to them. Joel had predicted it, and it IS going to come to pass, BUT it was NOT fulfilled on the day of Pentecost.
Joel 2:28-32 has NOT yet been fulfilled! In the Book of Joel, we will find that he had a great deal to say about “the day of the Lord.” The day of the Lord will begin with the Great Tribulation period. In three chapters of the Book of Joel “the day of the Lord” is mentioned 5 times. Joel talks about the FACT that it is a time of war, a time of judgment upon the Earth. It has NOT yet been fulfilled. It was NOT fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost.
Revelation 6:12-17 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. 14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. 15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand? (KJV) . . . When the 6th seal is opened, the scene is again shifted to the Earth. Scripture does foretell of this eventful time in other places (Isa.13:9-13; 34:1-4; Joel 2:30-31; Zeph.1:14-15; Mat.24:29; Mark 13:24-25). The first five judgments were directed toward specific areas, but this judgment will be world-wide. EVERYONE will be afraid of the awesome power of God. Even the Earth itself shall tremble! Dread and terror shall seize ALL mankind.
John saw the sky rolled up like a scroll and taken away. And ALL the mountains and ALL the islands moved from where they had been. Nahum 1:5-6 states this very same truth; and too Rev.20:11. This is to be taken literally! The sky shall be rolled up like a scroll; and EVERY mountain and EVERY island shall be moved out of their place! This is going to be one humongous earthquake, one as this world has never seen! God has power beyond words!
The kings of the Earth, the rulers, the generals, wealthy people, people with great power, and every slave and every free person . . . EVERYONE shall hide themselves in the caves and the rocks of the mountains. They cried out to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of the One who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb. For the great day of their wrath has come, and who will be able to survive?"
Grandeur, riches, valor no amount of strength, will be able to support ANY person at this time! People shall know that it is God sitting on His Throne and that He has caused this disaster. ALL human beings, great and small, will be terrified! They will beg the mountains to fall on them so they don’t have to face the judgment of the Lamb. This will be the most pathetic and tragic prayer meeting ever! They will pray for death that will not come!
This vivid picture is NOT intended to frighten TRUE believers. For them, the Lamb is a gentle Saviour and Shepherd. But, ALL those generals, emperors, kings, well known celebrities, AND common folk, who previously showed NO fear of God and blatantly flaunted their unbelief and rejection of Christ will KNOW they were wrong, after it is too late (Isa.45:22-23; Phil.2:10-11), and that they will have to face God's holy and righteous wrath. NO ONE who has ever denied or rejected God can survive the day of His wrath, BUT those who belong to Christ will receive a reward rather than punishment. Do you belong to Christ??? . . . You do NOT want to feel God's wrath. http://www.hisservants.org/god%27s_holy_wrath_h_s.htm
My opinion: It seems to me that the general Tribulation Period starts with the opening of the 1st seal in Rev.6:1, with the Antichrist making a 7 year peace (1 week) contract with Israel, then 3 ½ years later, he breaks the contract (Rev.6:3-4; Dan.9:27); and that is when the Great Tribulation begins with the opening of the 6th seal, when God’s wrath will come down full force.
