The Purpose of the Day of the Lord
In studying the Bible and events past and present, it is very important for us to understand WHY God does certain things. Most Christians agree that the events listed in Revelation will happen sometime in the future but it is rare that they discuss WHY these things are going to happen. When we study Old Testament Scripture concerning the Day of The Lord, it becomes quite clear that Almighty God does indeed have reasons for the Day of the Lord:
(1.) To Protect Israel
Isaiah 34:8 For it is the day of the LORD'S vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion. (KJV)
Joel 2:1 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand; (KJV)
Joel 3:14-16 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. 15 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. 16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel. (KJV)
The Scriptures above show a very specific purpose: God is protecting His Holy Nation of Israel (Deut.28:1, 13) at the time of the Day of The Lord. “Zion” or “Mt. Zion” is another name for Jerusalem and the Day of The Lord is a time when God will rise up and “roar” from His Holy City. Even with the spiritual state of Israel today, the people of Israel have always been chosen by God (Deut.7:6-7; 14:2), for special purposes. And even with the current political situation, the land of Israel is in God’s Holy Hand. It is fact, that most of the end times events of Revelation are centered on Israel. It is where Christ Jesus will return at His Second Coming (Zec.14:2-5, Rev. 19:11;21). Israel is also where the Antichrist will set himself up in the Temple to proclaim himself God (1 Thes. 2). Israel is also where the two witnesses will be sent by God during the final years of the world as we know it, and will preach from (Rev. 11). Israel is also where the 144,000 end times witnesses of God will be from (Rev.7). Israel is also where Armageddon will take place (Rev.19). And Israel is where Jesus will establish His Millennial Kingdom on the throne of David (Rev.20).
When we study Bible prophecy, the purposes of God should never be overlooked. One of the main plans of the end times is God reconciling, saving and restoring Israel and His Holy City of Jerusalem. The Day of The Lord is just the start of all this. So what causes God to mount this massive defense of the faithful remnant in Israel on the Day of The Lord? It will be the attack of the Gog-Magog army:
Ezekiel 38:18 And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, saith the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come up in my face. 19 For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel; 20 So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground. (KJV) . . . Do you see that when Gog (Russia) invades Israel, the Lord now rises to action in “fury”. God is angry and is going to intervene directly in world events. And His response is to shake the entire Earth with destructive force, another distinct characteristic of the day of the Lord. The Gog-Magog alliance’s attack on Israel will provoke the Lord to such anger, that His wrath and vengeance shall be unleashed on the entire Earth. In the Ezekiel 38 passage above, see that God says that “all men that are upon the face of the earth” will shake from the things God shall do. The prophet Ezekiel revealed more than 2,700 years ago, that in the last days, an alliance of nations led by Russia would gather together to invade Israel. I believe that day is speeding towards us. The Bible warns us of a future time when Israel will be surrounded by its enemies, and NO allies will come to her defense.
Zec. 12:2-3 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. 3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. (KJV) . . . Up until now, the United States has been an ally to Israel, but Obama seems to hate Israel and that is NOT good! See what God’s Holy Word clearly states:
Genesis 12:2-3 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. (KJV) . . . BEWARE!!!
(2.) To Punish Heathen Nations and ALL Who have Rejected God
Isaiah 2:11-12 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. 12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low: (KJV)
Isaiah 2:17-18 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. 18 And the idols he shall utterly abolish. (KJV)
Isaiah 13:6-11 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty. 7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man's heart shall melt: 8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames. 9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. 10 For the stars of heaven and the onstellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. 11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. (KJV)
Isaiah 30:3 Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion. (KJV)
Obadiah 1:15 For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head. (KJV)
Those worldly sinners who have lived arrogantly, exaggerating their importance, power and/or reputation, are living “high on the hog” and they shall will come to a horrible end! As we progress farther and farther, getting closer and closer to the last days (time between Christ’s Resurrection and His Second Coming), the world’s richest and most powerful shall become more and more wealthy and ungodly, leading the people of the world into deeper and greater wickedness and disgusting rebellion against God. The time for Divine Judgment arrives with the Day of The Lord. God’s holy and righteous wrath will be poured against the world to punish it for bloodshed, immorality, sin and wickedness. He shall put a complete end to the pride and rebellion of those who arrogantly exalt themselves in society. So many Bible doubters ask: “if there is a God, why does He allow all these bad things that are happening in the world?” My dear friend, God does indeed exist, but His patience with humanity is dwindling with each passing day. Our Holy and pure God CANNOT look on sin, ANY sin! Sin is YOUR choice, NOT God’s choice! God gives us all a free will, but it can be a very dangerous thing, IF we do not choose wisely! Read Romans chapter 1:17-32.
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (KJV) . . . God will NOT postpone the fulfilling of the Promise of the Lord’s Coming, at the Rapture or the Second Coming, or any other Promise beyond the appointed time. When God says it is time, Jesus shall return! SIMPLE AS THAT!! So many scoff of Christ's not yet coming, and question IF He will come at all . . . as if God has changed His mind or would not fulfill it! There are even some believers, who, because their faith is weak, and greatness of their sufferings, might grow impatient, and think Christ slow in coming to avenge their cause, and give them their reward. God is NOT willing that any should perish . . . It is not God's will that you or anyone else should perish. Perish = to destroy, destroy utterly, put to death, ruin. God wants NO one to go to Hell! He does NOT want to condemn anyone to Hell! Read our commentary on this chapter of Peter.
In the day of the Lord, God is going to respond and intervene by punishing the unbelieving world for all of its sin. Those who are living in powerful positions with immense wealth will have absolutely NO resources to save themselves at this time:
Zephaniah 1:14-18 The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. 15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, 16 A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers. 17 And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung. 18 Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land. (KJV) . . . Is is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly . . . it is near; very, very near! It is doubled to show just how close it is, and also to assure us of its coming as well. The Second Coming of Christ is scoffed at by millions! WHERE IS HE? They ask (2 Pet.3:4). My friend, there IS a day when Jesus shall return! And BEWARE, for when He does come, there shall be JUDGMENT! (Ps.1:5; Dan.7:10,26; Mat.7:2; 11:22,24; 12:36; 13:30,39; 21:40; 25:31-32; Lu.10:14; Acts 24:25; Rom.2:5,16; 14:10; 2 Cor.5:10; Heb.6:2; 9:27; 1 Pet.4:6; 2 Pet.2:4,9; 3:7; 1 Jn.4:17; Jude 1:6-7, 14-15; Rev.11:18; 14:7; 20:11-15).
Gold, silver, offshore bank accounts and all manner of wealth of any kind, no matter how much, will be of absolutely NO help at all at this time. FAITH in Christ Jesus as your Saviour and Lord will be the ONLY true protection in this time of great and terrible judgments. So, IF you are left behind at the Rapture, remember this!
Isaiah 2:17-19 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. 18 And the idols he shall utterly abolish. 19 And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth. (KJV)
Revelation 6:15-17 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand? (KJV) . . . The kings of the Earth, the rulers, the generals, the wealthy people, the people with great power, and every slave and every free person . . . EVERYONE hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They cried out to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of the One who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb. For the great day of their wrath has come, and who will be able to survive?"
Neither grandeur, riches, valor, nor strength, will be able to support ANY one at this time! People shall know that it is God sitting on His Throne, and that He has caused this catastrophe. ALL human beings, great and small, will be terrified! They will beg the mountains to fall on them so they don’t have to face the judgment of the Lamb. This will be the most pathetic and tragic prayer meeting ever! They will pray for death that will not come! This vivid picture is NOT intended to frighten believers. For them, the Lamb is a gentle Saviour and Shepherd. But, ALL those generals, emperors, kings, well known celebrities, AND common folk, who previously showed no fear of God and blatantly flaunted their unbelief and rejection of Christ will KNOW they were wrong (Isa.45:22-23; Phil.2:10-11), and that they will have to face God's wrath. NO ONE who has ever rejected God can survive the day of His wrath, but those who belong to Christ will receive a reward rather than punishment. Do you belong to Christ??? . . . You do NOT want to feel God's wrath. . . . . http://www.hisservants.org/god%27s_holy_wrath_h_s.htm
The wrath of the Lamb is a paradox (a statement that seems to contradict itself, but in fact is true). God created the lamb to represent Christ. The lamb is a symbol of gentleness and meekness. From the days of Abel to John the Baptist, Christ is depicted as a Lamb. But, just suppose this Lamb were to get angry. What then? What about the ‘other side’ of Christ? The wrath side of Jesus? Jesus DID get angry (John 2:15), and He made a whip and chased the money changers out of the Temple. Jesus is GOD! He is righteous and holy and pure; and He hates everything that is contrary to Himself! He does NOT hate what you and I hate, He is NOT vindictive or malicious.
Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; (KJV) . . . If we look at the world around us, we can’t help but see it revealing the wrath of God. Christ the Lamb, will one day be the supreme Judge of ALL mankind whether you accept this fact or not. And He will most certainly show and express His wrath on all ungodliness. His wrath and judgment shall absolutely come! Christians (TRUE believers, TRUE children of God) are called to an already decided course; that strait and narrow path that leads to eternal life (Mat. 7:13-14). NOT all people are God’s children as some false teachers teach! NOT everyone will go to Heaven. Just those who believe and accept Jesus as Saviour and Lord (John 1:12-13; 3:3; 1 John 5:10-12). We must be bold for the cause of Christ, confessing the Truth about Him (Gospel), and living and serving Him every day that we live. Whatever we go through, He is always with us (Mat.28:18-20; Heb.13:5; Phil.4:13). . . . . . . . . . . . http://www.hisservants.org/will_christ_be_judge_h_s.htm
Revelation 9:6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them. (KJV) . . . The pain and agony will be SO bad that people will try to commit suicide, but fail.
